What is Enlightenment? A Structuralist Analysis
15-16 August
This seminar will pursue a collective and experimental attempt to read Kant's classic essay, 'What is Enlightenment?', on the model of Barthes' reading of Balzac in his book S/Z. We will break Kant's essay into pieces and try to identify the 'codes' that structure it. One aim will be to explore whether philosophy can be fruitfully read in this way. The first seminar will provide an introduction to (or recap of) Barthes' method in S/Z before we embark on a collective analysis of the text. The second seminar will continue the analysis. The text of 'What is Enlightenment?' will be provided as a handout
