Translating Guyotat
28 August
Pierre Guyotat’s Merry Animals of Misery is a trilogy of fictional epics composed in a language that aims to include and embed multiple forms of French, within a strict musical and rhythmic frame. As one of Gutoyat’s works “in tongue,” it has drawn comparison to the later writings of James Joyce. This one-hour discussion and reading will focus on the work in progress of translating volume I, to consider how one approaches a text that lies at, or near, the limits of translation.
