Let's look at shoplifting from a performative aspect. What performance or illusion are shoplifters generating in order to appear as regular customers? To what degree are they convinced by their own performance? In the workshop we will analyze interviews conducted with actual shoplifters and get a better understanding of their inner workings. We will read excerpts from Rachel Shteir's The Steal: A Cultural History of Shoplifting (2012) and watch bits from Robert Bresson's Pickpocket (1959).
