In this session we will try to make sense of Simondon’s 1963 text ‘Amplification in Information Processes.’ Here Simondon presents a dialectical triad of informational processes: ‘transduction’, ‘modulation’, and ‘organisation’. Working through Simondon’s various examples of crystal formation, forest fires, and vacuum tubes, we will attempt to clarify the differences between these three categories not just as modes of physical individuation but, as he makes clear, as analogical models for processes of social and political structuration.
